We all know that physical, mental and spiritual maturity are distinct phases of human life. Each age phase offers different gifts and challenges, and in adulthood we have become masters of their uses.
But the most important thing for all of us is to learn to recognise, accept and learn from the gifts of maturity. Here are 11 key life lessons and perspectives that every mature adult should try to remember.
1. Take responsibility
No matter how much you have, or how much you have contributed, you always have the power to change the world around you, and to create the life you want to live.
Choose the things you believe in, and work hard towards achieving them. You can start by working towards becoming a leader, by devoting yourself to discovering what you are passionate about and trying to make it happen, and to finding out what you want to do in life.
If you know what you want, you can create a plan to reach it.
In order to live a life that is meaningful and fulfilling, you must be truthful to yourself and to the people around you. Honest relationships with others, and with yourself, will allow you to get out of your comfort zone, in an effort to experience and learn more about your true nature.
When you strive to be truly honest with yourself and others, you will naturally want to do the same.
3. Ask questions
It is a mistake to expect your soul mate, partner, co-worker or anyone else to know exactly what they need. Sometimes you may need to help them understand, and other times you may need to just be there, ready to listen, to listen without having to supply them with answers.
There is no point in coming across as trying to solve problems and provide solutions.
It’s much more important to help them understand what they need.
4. Own up
When you feel like you don’t fit in, take a moment and ask yourself why. What is going on in your head that is making you feel the way you do? What makes you think that the way you feel is the right way for you?
How can you change the way you are thinking to accept that you need to find something different?
Trying to hide or change your feelings will only lead to hurt feelings, misunderstandings and unresolved issues.
You need to own up to yourself, and realise that your feelings, if left unchecked, can destroy your life.
Love is the most valuable currency you will ever come across. The more you give, the more you receive. In order to experience love, you have to love, be loved and take care of yourself first.
Be selfish, then open up your heart to receive love.
Trust is critical to enjoying your life. However, you must never be deceived by other people or your own emotions.
If you do not trust yourself, how can you ever expect to receive true love?
Trust is essential to creating peace and to living a meaningful life.
7. Never lose sight of your dreams
Everyone dreams, everyone has something they want to achieve. Sometimes our dreams change, and sometimes they change for the better, but if they ever get too far away from us, we tend to lose sight of them.
Get your dream back.
If you are going to do anything in life, you have to prepare yourself for it.
Learn how to be calm, in control, and ready for anything that comes your way.
Being prepared is a life skill that can be learned and practised.
Take time to listen to other people. Ask questions, you might learn something, or learn something important about yourself.
Don’t be afraid of your own voice, or afraid to express your opinions. You have the right to your own beliefs. You have the right to your own dreams and desires. You have the right to be you.
Your time is worth living it and living it how you want.
The answers to life’s questions might never be found, but they are there. You just have to look a little harder to find them.
10. Work hard
Work hard, and you will gain more than you give. Nothing will come easy. Your work will bring you great rewards, but your success will not be easy. You will have to work, and struggle, to achieve what you want. But, the rewards will be worth the effort.
It might not be your first dream, but it is your last one that you will give up on.
